How Solar Electricity Works

The solar electric modules are connected in series, like batteries, to generate the final system DC voltage:

  •  The solar array current output is routed from the roof to the inverter (customarily mounted next to the electrical panel)
  •  The inverter converts the solar array power from a high-voltage DC to a clean 120V AC.
  •  The 120V AC flows from the solar meter to a dedicated breaker in your electrical panel.
  •  When your solar electric system provides the exact amount of power that your house currently uses, your electric meter will stand still.
  •  When your solar system provides more power than your house or business uses, any excess will flow backwards through the utility meter, and you will be building credit with your utility company.
  •  When your solar electric system is providing less power than your house is using, then the utility grid will provide the rest; however, your meter will be spinning forward only for the excess electricity that is required.
  • The system requires mounting hardware, wire sizing, junction boxes, grounding equipment, over-current protection, DC and AC disconnects and many other accessories. Once installed, your PV system requires very little maintenance and will produce electricity cleanly and quietly for 30 years and more.

What is Photovoltaics (PV)?

Semiconducting materials, such as silicon, convert light directly into electricity. The photovoltaic phenomenon is significant in physics and chemical studies.

In 1890, the word “photovoltaics” (PV) first appeared. It is derived from two Greek words, “phos”, meaning light and “volt”, which means electricity.

Photovoltaic describes the phenomenon of light electricity where light can be directly converted into electricity. Solar panels use this phenomenon to provide green power for homes, industries and businesses. Fortunately, the price of solar panels has been declining, making it more accessible.

Photovoltaics systems can make us more independent from fossil fuels and solve the environmental issues we face today.

How Does Photovoltaics Work?

The photovoltaic system uses semiconductors to generate power using the photoelectric effects. Photons (natural or artificial) of sufficient energy can excite electrons into a higher-energy state.

The electrons in a semiconductor, which are typically not free, become free. They then behave just like they would if they were in a conductor. The captured electrons are then converted into an electric current, which can be used for electricity production. Photovoltaics will produce more electricity the more light is absorbed.

By using photovoltaic technology, we can convert solar energy easily into electricity. This is an excellent alternative to the traditional methods of energy production. You can watch the video below to see how photovoltaics could help you power your home’s electrical needs.

What are the Benefits of Solar PV Panels?

You now know what a solar panel is, and how it functions. It’s time to learn the benefits that come with using this technology.

Here’s a list of the benefits of solar energy.

  • The Earth is abundant in renewable solar energy.
  • Solar energy will always be available because it is always available. Scientists estimate that the sun will continue to shine for at least five billion years and provide us with solar power.
  • It’s Clean and Environmentally-Friendly
  • Unlike fossil fuels, solar energy has no negative impact on the environment. Solar energy is a great way to save the earth.
  • Solar panel maintenance costs are low
  • Solar energy systems are low maintenance because they have few moving parts.
  • Solar panels are covered by a warranty of 20-25 years from most reputable manufacturers. Keep the surface of your panels clean.
  • Solar Energy Can Reduce Your Electricity Bills
  • Solar panels are a great way to reduce your energy costs.

If you want to reduce your energy costs, you will need large commercial solar panels.
